Two Late Goals Seals Cup Victory for the Hillians
By David Marriott
Burgess Hill Town progressed to the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup after their 2-1 victory over Ashford United on Saturday.
The goals came from Tyrell Richardson-Brown and substitute Dan Thompson, in quick succession in the last quarter of the game, with Shaun Welford grabbing a consolation seven minutes from time.
It was a cagey affair with Ashford United having most of the ball throughout the first half. Ryan Palmer tested Josh James in goal with several good crosses from the wing.
Late on in the first half, Burgess Hill managed to get a foothold in the game. Pat Harding and Sam Gargan both saw their efforts cleared off the line by the Ashford defence to keep the scores level at half-time.
Ashford started the second-half the better side as Josh Wooley found himself in on goal, but was ruled offside. Cheick Toure was a rock at the back for the Hillians, he even managed to produce some step-overs at the other end of the pitch, and his resulting shot was deflected.
As it began to look like a replay was needed, Leon Redwood whipped in a great cross, which was headed home by Tyrell Richardson-Brown at the far post. Dan Thompson doubled the lead just four minutes later after a great weaving run in behind the Ashford defence.
An 83rd-minute goal from striker Shaun Welford gave the Ashford fans hope, but the Hillians held on for the win despite a late onslaught on their goal.
Ian Chapman and his side will be looking to continue their good form away to Dulwich Hamlet in the Ryman Premier League next Saturday.
Man of the Match: Dan Thompson changed the game when he came on and grabbed the winning goal.
