Many had feared they may not see any action at the Green Elephants Stadium thanks to Storm Dennis, but after some impeccable work by the ground staff, the pitch was deemed playable. The Hillians started off strongly, with two golden opportunities in the opening exchanges – but neither Aaron Smith-Joseph or Tom Cadman could convert. It was, however, the visitors who took the lead, as former Hillians, Curtis Gayler’s long-ranged effort skipped off the surface and into the bottom corner. As the half drew to a close, chances became few and far between. Early substitute, Drew Matthews headed over from a corner with minutes to go, but he wasn’t to be denied twice, as on the stroke of half-time, he tapped home after Elliot Cross’ shot was tipped onto the post.

The Hillians picked up from where they left off, with Smith-Joseph once again being denied by a great Thorp save. From the resulting corner, Jay Lovett’s men took the lead, as Jordi Ndozid fired home following a failed clearance. In the 69th minute, the Hillians’ persistence paid off, as Louie Downey grabbed his first goal for the club. capitalising on another poor clearance. All of a sudden, Storm Dennis, which was engulfing the Green Elephants’ became an afterthought; as Drew Matthews netted his second of the afternoon and the Hillians’ fourth – turning home from Martyn Box’s free-kick. There was till time for the visitors to grab a consolation, as Ben Bacon slotted past Fynn Talley to mark the final action of the game.

A comfortable and commanding victory in terrible conditions for the Hillians – which sees Jay Lovett’s men climb up the 14th in the table.
