Hillians History – On This Day – 7th March 2000
25-year RUR Cup win anniversary
25 years ago today, on the 7th March 2000, the Hillians won the RUR Cup final for the second time in the club’s history. An impressive 3-0 win over Saltdean United, who were ahead of Burgess Hill at the time, not only left the the fans in awe back then but still is a proud moment to look back on today.
The match started 10 minutes later than the anticipated 7.30 p.m. kick-off due to crowd congestions before the game but the Hillians stayed focused and had a rapid start once the game had kicked off.
Two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the final set the scene for what would become an epic night for Burgess Hill. Paul Thomsett, who had just returned back to the UK two days before the game after his Barbados holiday, scored the opening goal followed by a stunning shot by defender Paul Williams from outside the box.
While Saltdean had their chances, they capitalise on them enough, the Hillians played at a consistently high level despite their early 2-0 lead. In the second half, the Tigers used the first minutes to take control of the game. However, Tony Holden crushed Saltdean’s chances of a comeback with his goal in the 57th minute. From that point on, the Hillians did an amazing job at defending and left know chance for their opponents to score, resulting in a confident 3-0 win.
After the game their new manager, Gary Croydon, said: “We have a good blend of youth and experience. That all came together tonight. We scored some great goals and the lads deserve this success.”
Player of the Match Thomsett added: “It was a great night for us and I’m really pleased we rose for the big occasion. We’re a big match side.”
It was a deserved win for Burgess Hill against a weaker Saltdean side, marking their second RUR Cup victory. They celebrated a double success in the 2000 season as they went on to win the Sussex Floodlight Cup a couple of weeks later against.
It was one of the most successful seasons ever for Burgess Hill, creating amazing memories among players and fans – a moment that is truly special to reflect on..
