Our exciting new Women’s squad are really starting to gel as a formidable unit. We have been following them closely since the summer when no less than 24 players turned up for preseason training. Since then, numbers have been whittled down during a volley of preseason games. Last week they took a three nil on the road at Woodingdean. It was another clean sheet at home on Sunday writes Colin Bowman
Both teams turned up under grey skies with a noticeable breeze sweeping across the ground. It stayed dry through out with mild temperatures. The surface looked perfect for free-flowing football. Hill started in fine style making the most of space down the right wing. Winger Hannah Sparshott enjoyed much of the ball and producing some penetrating crosses. Indeed Hill could and should have been two nil up after 15 mins. The centre forward just missing out in inviting crosses. The 1st goal duly arrived mid-way through the 1st half as Alana Delaney pounced on a loose ball to thump home from 8 yards. Just moments later Spareshott bamboozled the keeper with a run and shot from an acute angle. Delaney completed a good half for the hosts as the striker caressed a third into the corner.
Whitehawk changed their formation for the 2nd half and suddenly became less open. It meant that Hill had to work harder for possession and space. The visitors also began to threaten the mid field battle. Hill had to remain patient and diligent for 20 mins. That Hawks effort wasn’t sustainable and Hill striking sensation Brogan Kirk made use of tiring legs. With 15 mins left she tried her luck from 20 yards, the ball flying top corner keeper no chance. Kirk went on to add the icing on a great day for Hill scoring two more late goals. Six nil to the Hillians and three important points.
Goal scorers always take the headlines. Alana and Brogan will be the talk of this match. However, Hill looked very solid in mid field with defensive centre mid Rachel Walker getting most things right. She looked comfortable in possession and accurate with the pass. Then courageous with some defensive headers. Walker was perhaps the reason for an important clean sheet. We caught up with our Player of the Match post-match. ‘we have been learning each other’s games and we feel that things are gelling. We now go to Ashford and its an exciting opportunity under lights!’
Manager Tom Clingo suggested ‘we have a big week coming up and today was a great start. It was great to play on this surface the pitch is in remarkable condition, and it suits our play’
Our Womens team travel to Ashford Kent on Wednesday evening in the Isthmian League Cup. Keep up to date with that on club social media sites. I am sure that all connections wish the team all the best.
