The Hillians travelled to Suffolk with a team that was playing it’s sixth game in thirteen days!
Ian Chapman gave Tariq Richards his full debut, Stuart Tuck started alongside recalled Jack Brivio and Charlie Bennett in midfield, and Hafeez Sanusi started up front.
The home side started well with the majority of the possession, but the first chance fell to the Hillians when Jack Brivio stole the ball in midfield, after 15 minutes, and played a ball to Sanusi who’s shot never looked like troubling the home keeper. James Shaw made a good save on 30 minutes, but the majority of the Hillians defending was from Leiston free kick’s and corners, that never really threatened the away team’s goal.
The second half began as the first finished, with Leiston controlling the play. The home side thought they had taken the lead, when Reed netted from close range after 52 minutes – only to be adjudged offside. Tuck was soon replaced by Richmond, and Lee Harding replaced Sanusi. On 69 minutes, unfortunately for the Hillians, the deadlock was broken, when a shot from Brothers saw Shaw save with his legs, but the rebound was pounced on by Ainsley, who found the back of the net. Tighe then replaced Smith-Joseph, and a ‘trademark’ distance shot from Tighte nearly found the net within minutes of him being introduced. The Hillians thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Elphick was ‘man handled’ from a Tighe corner at the back post, but the referee waved play on. The home side sealed the points in stoppage time when Shaw brought down Reed, and Ainsley converted for his second of the game.
Hillians find themselves at the bottom of the table, due to Tooting & Mitcham taking a point away at Harrow. A win at home to Staines on Saturday will give ourselves a real fighting chance to stay in this league next season! We need you fans more than ever before, please don’t give up hope!
