Dorking Wanderers Match Report

Ian Chapman made two changes to Saturday’s starting line up, with Aaron Smith Joseph replacing Pat Harding, and a debut for midfielder Che Krabbendam – who has been dual signed from Dover Athletic.

The first half was a rather ‘cagey’ affair, with both sides enjoying long spells of possession, but neither side managing to threaten either Di Bernardo in the Hillians net, or Huk in Dorking’s. Connor Tighe continued from where he left off at Staines, being the Hillians’ main threat throughout the first half – with his pace and quick feet.

HT 0-0

The second half saw both sides come out with more intent. Dorking came close twice, but good defending by Joey Taylor saw the score remain 0-0. In the 52nd minute, the deadlock was broken. The ball fell to Aaron Smith Joseph, following Tighe’s shot, and the winger’s shot eluded Huk, in the Dorking goal, and nestled in the bottom corner. The Hillians began to ooze in confidence, playing some beautiful flowing football, following the goal. Deservedly, the Hillians’ lead was doubled, when in the 64th minute, Tighe scored his second goal in as many games – as his smart touch and finish rippled the back of the net.

The game was dramatically brought to a hault, when in the 73rd minute, a clash of heads between Hillians captain, Gary Elphick and Dorking’s Matthew Briggs, saw the Dorking player stay down on the half way line, for a couple of minutes, following the 50/50 challenge. Briggs was then helped towards the dressing rooms for further treatment, however, after 20 yards, was laid back on the ground, by those assisting him off the pitch. For Briggs’ safety, an ambulance was called. The rapid response unit arrived within minutes, and continued to treat the injured Briggs, whilst still on the pitch. With the game now being delayed for approximately 30 minutes, the referee made the decision to abandon the fixture, due to the situation – and Briggs still receiving attention.

Both players went to hospital that evening, with Gary Elphick leaving that night, and Matt Briggs the following morning.

The outcome of the game will now be decided by the Bostik League Management Committee in due course.

Further details will be released, as soon as they become available.
