See Matt Dale’s match report from yesterday’s pre-season friendly against Horsham FC:
The Hornets began on the front foot, enjoying plenty of possession and frequently drawing The Hillians into committing several clumsy challenges around the box, but despite a faint shout for a penalty early on, The Hornets were made to wait until the nineteenth minute when Scott Kirkwood broke the deadlock, finishing sweetly from a well-worked goal. After winning another freekick, this time at the edge of the box, Asa Nicolson’s pull back towards Kirkwood resulted in the midfielder dispatching the ball beyond former Hornet goalkeeper, James Shaw.
H/T: Horsham 1 Burgess Hill Town 0
A predicable glut of substitutions from both sides greeted the second half, as the visitors looked to regain a foothold back into the match, yet they found themselves thwarted by Josh James who produced several good saves, including a great stop to deny Tony Garrod.
However, The Hillians appeared to run out of steam, and were almost punished when Horsham had the ball in the net for a second time, only for the linesman’s flag to rule it out.
There was no denying Horsham the next time though, as with two minutes of normal time remaining, they doubled their lead and killed the game off. It was another well-worked goal for the spectators to enjoy, as Scott Harris’ delicate knock down was rifled in on the volley by teenager Alfie Rogers.
